The families of Giovanni Uballe Huerta, Kiah Jae Begaye and their two young sons are mourning an unimaginable loss after all four family members were killed in a devastating head-on collision near Heber-Overgaard, Arizona.

Giovanni, 26, Kiah, 26, and their children, 4-year-old Dakota and 2-year-old Malakai, were traveling home to the Valley after visiting family in New Mexico when the crash occurred on State Route 260 on Monday, September 7, 2026.

According to authorities, the family was traveling in a black passenger vehicle when it was struck head-on by a pickup truck near milepost 300, approximately four miles west of Heber. The collision claimed the lives of all four members of the family and left two occupants of the pickup seriously injured.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety identified the driver of the pickup as 21-year-old Jesse David Lovato of Los Lunas, New Mexico. Authorities said he was booked into the Navajo County Detention Center and faces four counts of manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision remains ongoing.

Remembering Giovanni Huerta

For Giovanni’s family, the tragedy represents the sudden loss of a beloved son, father and husband.

His father, Joel Huerta, described Giovanni as his only son and spoke publicly about the difficulty of accepting that he was gone. The family remembered him as a devoted father who loved spending time with his children.

Giovanni also enjoyed working on cars and had built a life centered around his family. Relatives said he and Kiah had been together since high school, making their relationship one that had grown alongside their family over many years.

The couple had recently married in April, according to their parents. They lived in Laveen, where Giovanni worked as a mechanic.

Joel had also been looking forward to spending time with the family on a camping trip planned for the following weekend. The trip was expected to be a special family experience, including a first camping outing for one of the children.

Instead, relatives are now left remembering the plans and experiences that will never take place.

Remembering Kiah Begaye

Kiah’s family is also grieving the loss of a young mother whose life revolved around her children and loved ones.

Her mother, Chrissy Kaibetoney, described the family’s grief as overwhelming and difficult to put into words. Relatives said Kiah was a loving mother and was proud of her Navajo heritage.

Kiah had also been beginning a Native American clothing business, according to family members. Those who knew her are now remembering not only her role as a mother and wife but also the hopes and plans she had for her future.

Her uncle, Cori Kaibetoney, expressed gratitude for the prayers and support being offered by members of the public as the family faces the loss of four loved ones at once.

Two Young Lives Lost

The deaths of Dakota and Malakai have added another heartbreaking dimension to the tragedy.

The two boys, aged 4 and 2, had only recently begun attending a Head Start program. Their families had expected to watch them grow, reach new milestones and experience the many stages of childhood.

Instead, their lives ended alongside those of their parents in the devastating crash.

For relatives, memories of the children will now become especially precious. Photographs, family moments and the everyday experiences they shared will remain important reminders of two young lives that were deeply loved.

Community Supports the Family

The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of sympathy from relatives, friends and members of the wider community.

Family members said they have received prayers and messages of support from people across different platforms. A verified fundraising effort has also been established to help with funeral expenses as the family makes arrangements for the four victims.

The support has provided some comfort during a period of profound grief.

At the same time, family members have urged drivers to take care on the roads, particularly during holiday weekends, emphasizing that reaching a destination safely is more important than rushing.

Funeral Arrangements

Funeral arrangements for Giovanni, Kiah and their two children were still being finalized as their relatives gathered to mourn and support one another.

The family is now facing the difficult task of arranging services for four loved ones while coming to terms with a loss that happened within moments.

The crash also left two people from the pickup truck seriously injured. They were transported to hospitals in the Phoenix area for treatment.

A Family Remembered

Giovanni Huerta and Kiah Begaye leave behind grieving parents, relatives, friends and loved ones who are struggling to comprehend the loss of an entire young family.

They were high school sweethearts who built a life together, became parents and recently began a new chapter as a married couple. Their two children were at the center of that life.

The sudden tragedy has ended those plans far too soon, leaving their families to hold onto the memories of the years they shared.

As the investigation continues, the Huerta and Begaye families are mourning four lives that meant so much to them.

Giovanni, Kiah, Dakota and Malakai will be remembered not only for the tragic circumstances of their deaths, but for the family bonds, love and memories they leave behind.

May their loved ones find strength and comfort in the memories they shared, and may those recovering from the crash receive healing and support in the days ahead.
